CANADA IN KOREA: AUGUST CULTURAL LISTINGS The Embassy of Canada in Seoul HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH Dr. SCHOFIELD MEMORIAL ARTS EXHIBITION Date: August 10 – 17 (Opening Reception: August 10, 3:00 pm) Venue: Jinheung Arthall SEE: www.jharthall.org Dr. Frank Schofield (1889-1970), a Canadian missionary, is best known for his active role in the March 1st Movement. An ardent supporter of the struggle for independence under Japanese occupation, he gathered information about independence fighters and made a photographic record of the movement. As a scholar and teacher, he made a great contribution not only in the field of veterinary science, where he excelled, but also to his students, teaching them their responsibility in the fight for national freedom. The Dr. Schofield Memorial Committee, in conjunction with the Canadian Embassy and Seoul National University, has organized a series of memorial activities to commemorate Dr. Frank Schofield, such as creating a memorial statue and garden. To raise funds for such a meaningful project, the Embassy and the Committee will hold Dr. Schofield Memorial Arts Exhibition at Jinheung Arthall in Seoul from August 10th to 17th. In the exhibition, 43 art students studying and living in Canada will present their works in the theme of Dr. Schofield and donate sales of their works to the Memorial project. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CALGARY STENTSON SHOW BAND Dates & Venues: August 6, 7:30 pm: Seoul Forest August 7, 7:30 pm: Danjin Performing Arts Facility August 9: Everland SEE: www.stetsonband.org Formed in 1988, the Calgary Stentson Show Band proudly represents Calgary and Canada with a unique combination of tradition and innovation. As a house band at the world famous “Spruce Meadows Equistrian Centre”, they won several major awards at international marching band competitions. The Calgary Stentson Show Band will perform at several venues in Korea and participate in 2006 world Championship for Marching Show Bands in Jeju Island. CLAYARCH CINEMA NIGHT 2006 Date: August 22 (Tue) – 27(Sun) Venue: Clayarch Museum in Gimhae Admission: Free SEE: www.clayarch.org Founded in 2005, Clayarch Museum in Gimhae aims to secure different possibilities created through the connection of architectural ceramics. As its summer special event, the Museum will screen 28 international films for six days. Three Canadian films – ‘Emporte-moi’ by Lea Pool, ‘Elles Etaient Cinq’ by Ghyslaine Cote, and ‘Littoral’ by Brigitte Germain – will be featured. HMCS REGINA’S “FRIENDSHIP” TOUR DATE: August 25 - 29 Venue: Port of Jinhae, Gyeongnam SEE: www.navy.dnd.ca/regina HMCS Regina set sail on July 30th from Pearl Harbor to begin a six-week deployment to Northeast Asia with port visits in China, Japan, and South Korea. The deployment, known as “Westpoly”, is part of the Canadian Navy’s strategy to build strong bilateral and multilateral ties. Regina will make a port visit in Jinhae, Gyeongnam from August 25th to 29th.
